Shyam Divan

Shyam Divan is a senior Supreme Court advocate, working primarily on civil litigation across banking, securities law, arbitration, administrative law and environmental law. He often represents citizen groups in several environmental cases and is currently also assisting the Supreme Court, as amicus curiae in the Bellary case involving illegal iron ore mining in Karnataka.

He is the co-author of Environmental Law and Policy in India (2nd Edition, 2001, Oxford) and has authored chapters on Public Interest Litigation in the Oxford Handbook of the Indian Constitution (2016) and Contours of EIA In India in Water and the Laws in India (2009, Sage).

Mr. Divan has also taught environmental law at the graduate and post graduate level at the University of Mumbai and occasionally taken lectures at the National Law School of India University, Bangalore and at the National Judicial Academy, Bhopal.

He is a member of the Executive Committee of LAWASIA (2016-17) and Co-chair of the LAWASIA Human Rights Section. He is also an Executive Committee member of the Bar Association of India and a part of the Board of Consumer Education and Research Centre (CERC), Ahmedabad, and Chairman, Managing Committee, The Indian School.
