While India’s economy has grown well, the country has the highest number of stunted children in the world (40.6 million). India is home to one-third of the global total of stunted children under the age of five (Source: NFHS3 2005-06, CNNS 2016-18). A stunted child is too short for their age, does not fully develop due to chronic undernutrition during the most critical periods of growth and development in early life.
Stunting, associated with an underdeveloped brain, causes irreversible physical and mental damage to children. These include diminished mental ability and learning capacity, poor school performance, higher risks of nutrition-related chronic diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension, and obesity in future.
Problems such as stunting, which are often invisible, need to be made visible, so that families and communities can take action.
CARE India is working in communities to provide quality health and nutrition services. With an objective to
- Avert stunting in more than 42,500 children
- Avoid 1,781+deaths among children who are under five years of age
- Improving health of 8,450+ women who suffer from severe Anaemia which results in increased stunting and wasting in children.
Through our programmes, we reach out to lakhs of children and pregnant and lactating mothers for regular health check-ups, timely initiation of breast feeding, ensuring minimum acceptable diet, deworming and diarrhoea for children, iron supplantation for mothers, complimentary feeding and more.
Contribute to achieving the goal of a healthy future for under-nourished children.
