Education has been one the main services hugely impacted due to COVID-19. In India, education of more than 247 million school age children has got impacted and most affected have been children especially girls from marginalized communities.

In order to ensure the safety of girls and to follow the advisories issued by central and state government regarding school closure till normalcy, CARE India has taken a decision to not operationalize Udaan in residential mode for this academic year. Education of all children especially of marginalized girls has disrupted due to COVID-19 in past 5 months.

CARE India is reaching out to marginalized girls including those who were out of school before COVID-19 through non-residential community-based learning centres (CLC) . These will function as mini Udaan for the interim period to accelerate the learning of girls so that they could be mainstreamed in formal schools after reopening. Moreover, girls will be provided with leadership skills so that they can negotiate to continue their education.

CLCs will be implemented in 5 villages near to Udaan camps. And each centre will enroll 20-25 children in age group of 8-14 years. However, priority will be given to adolescent girls who were out of school even before COVID-19.

Broad implementation plans

Engagement with Udaan graduates to support implementation of community learning centres (CLCs):

Udaan has a strong feature of follow up with these girls to ensure there is a support network for girls to resolve conflicts, identify solutions and take decisions to make informed life choices. Udaan Alma mater will be engaged in supporting teachers in operationalizing community-based learning centers. They will be engaged through an internship program where they will be groomed, mentored and incentivized for the role. They are looked as change agents in the community and this initiative will also provide alternative employability opportunity for the girls in their own community.

Selection of girls and villages for the CLC:

Children have lost more than half of the academic session with very less opportunity to get education at their doorstep. CARE India through CLCs will reach out to such marginalized girls in their community itself to ensure that they receive educational and socio-emotional support. CLCs will also reach out to boys in the community

Customization of Udaan curriculum to address academic and socio-emotional needs of children particularly adolescent girls:

CARE India has designed a special training curriculum in language, Maths, EVS and English to accelerate the learning of out of school children and to equip them with primary level competencies in one-year duration. Keeping in view the challenges posed by the pandemic, CARE India has customized the curriculum to address the academic and socio emotional needs of children especially adolescent girls. For this teacher and children facing worksheets have been developed based in order to ensure that children are equipped with minimum level of learning in Language and Maths. A learning tracker has also been developed to keep track the learning level of children.

Regular engagement with community for education and safety of children:

Since the CLCs will be based in the community (identified villages), CARE India is building a strong rapport with the key stakeholders like representatives of local governance, influential people, Village level health workers, SMC members and parents of children who will be enrolled in CLCs.
